Genom zu Weihnachten?

Hallo anonyme Gruppe meiner Freunde von der ich denke es könnte sie interessieren :)

Bei 23andMe kann mein sein Genom sequenzieren lassen (hab ich schon gemacht) und bekommt Einblicke in vererbte Risiken, Abstammungsgeschichten und so weiter.

PKM – some questions and answers

In preparation of our Personal Knowledge Management Workshop, I just filled out this questionnaire (please also do this if you are interested in the topic). Here are my answers to some of the questions: 

What is your background?
cognitive psychology, interaction design

What is your definition of PKM (Personal Knowledge Management)?
Core definition: Organizing knowledge cues of our own ideas and knowledge in a way that we can efficiently  recreate these thoughts when we need them.
Wider definition: including PIM (Personal Information Management)

How would you define data?
something stored on a medium

How would you define information?
something perceived by a consciuos being

How would you define knowledge?
something understood by a consciuos being

What is your research interest within the field of PKM?
How can we adequately support the human mind to efficiently deal with large amounts of knowledge?

What is the biggest challenge regarding PKM or PKM research?
Compromises between the capabilities of a tool and its usability.

What I always wanted to say about PKM (but no one ever asked me)
If we want to make further progress in science and civilisation, we will all be very dependent on PKM techniques – be they internal or external to the mind. 
The question on how the use of these techniques restricts and guides our thinking, and how we can deal with their absence, should be thoroughly studied.

Liquid Democracy

Ich hab zwar noch nicht alles komplett durchgelesen und und ge-video-schaut, aber was ich auf http://liqd.de/ und http://wiki.piratenpartei.de/Liquid_Democracy (letztlich via Heise: Berliner Piraten verfluessigen innerparteiliche Demokratie, danke Max!) gesehen habe sieht mir sehr vielversprechend aus:

Endlich mal ein Versuch, Demokratie schön umzusetzen. Vereint werden die Vorteile der direkten Demokratie (mehr Einfluss als alle paar Jahre mit einer Partei ein unteilbares Packet zu wählen) mit denen der repräsentativen Demokratie (Delegieren von Einfluss und Entscheidungen, weil nicht jeder Wähler Zeit und Lust hat, sich in voller Tiefe in alle Themen einzuarbeiten). Dazu kommt, dass man seine Stimme für verschiedene Themenbereiche verschiedenen Menschen/Gruppen geben kann und vieles mehr Rafinessen, die ein feingranulares Mitbestimmen und -diskutieren eben so möglich machen wie  ein einfaches Delegieren.

Dazu kommt das Projekt – wenn ich es in diesem Vortrag recht verstanden habe – einem langersehnten Wunsch von mir ein Stücken näher: eine Möglichkeit, strukturiert online zu diskutieren, so dass am ende statt eines endlosen Threads eine Übersicht herauskommt, in der man sieht, über welche Teile des Diskurses Konsens herrscht, in welchen Teilen es welche Lager gibt und wie stark diese sind, und welche Bereiche noch wild diskutiert werden. Und das jeweils so, dass man auch die jeweiligen Argumente direkt sehen kann, eingebettet in ihrer logischen Struktur, ohne dass man sie mühsam aus einzelnen Nachrichten extrahieren müsste und dafür mit numerischen Angaben darüber wieviele Diskutanden das Argument unterstützen.
Naja – das ist jedenfalls mein Wunsch. Gewisse Teile davon gibt es schon (z.B. Solvr). Aber von einer richtigen Diskussionsplattform, die das alles benutzbar umsetzt weiß ich nichts. Für Hinweise bin ich natürlich dankbar.

kNet - an e-Science scenario of the future internet

This is a scenario, on what I envision how future internet services could support sciences in a better way (e-Science). The storty is quite dense, I could write pages about each other sentence, but I am lazy and so I don't. If you have qustions, leave a comment below. Google to wash away eMail, blogs and wikis in one Wave?

Google has just introduced their new big thing: wave.google.com.
Wave is combining several functionalities in a way that it somehow covers all of the following in one integrated framework: eMail, wikis, google docs

From eMail to instant messages: Users can send messages and have chat-like conversations. New members of a conversation see the whole thing instead of just the new stuff.

From Wikis to Collaborative Documents: In the same time, all participants of such a conversation or document, can edit everything in there, easily link other such documents or web content and changes are being simultaneously pushed to all participants.

From changelog to playback: Instead of single diffs, one can just play back the whole history of such a document, easily tracking each user's contributions.

Client-Server-Server-Client: Everyone can set up their own waves server and like eMail, IRC or Jabber, they will federate content across in real time, so users can choose whichever provider they want.

It's extensible: Everyone can contribute, especially by adding various kinds of extensions – of which they have allready shown some quite amazing examples. And it will be open source, so everyone can change it and run their own server.

I can't summarize it all here, go watch the introduction video for yourself (or search for better summaries ;).

I wonder wether this might even bring the long desired change away from our current old eMail system with its many flaws (that I will discuss another time ;).

Piratenpartei

Als traditioneller Grün-Wähler war ich überrascht, dass beim Wahl-O-Mat für die Europawahl die Grünen für mich erst auf Platz 8 kamen. Platz eins teilten sich die mir völlig unbekannte EDE und die Pirtenpartei, die ich bisher für einen Scherz à la Pogo-Partei hielt. Ein Blick auf die Ziele der Piratenpartei hinterließ ein angenehmes Gefühl kognitiver Heimat – für mich erscheint diese Partei als echte Alternative. Bei der Europawahl sind sie wohl schon dabei und für die Zulassung zur Bundestagswahl werd ich jetzt gleich mal ne Unterschrift spenden.

Mouse Gestures for Mac

xGestures is an application for Mac OS X that enables to control any Mac application with mouse gestures.
There are others also (like cocoa gestures) but this one seems to be the best. It even recognizes ‘rocking’ gestures (like I only knew them from Opera), i.e. clicking one mouse button and then another one before releasing the first one. Interaction-wise, i think this is the fastest and most effortless way to e.g. go back anf forward in a web browser.
It can be freely configured for any app so you can use mouse gestures to close windows, switch applications, control music – anything really.
It’s $5,– once the trial expires. I’ll definitively pay.
